Caption: Light micrograph of nerve cells, or neurones, in the human brain. The 4 dark cells towards the top of the image are Purkinje cells, which are among the largest neurones in the body. Below them is the outer or ganglionic layer of the cortex of the cerebellum, which lies at the base & back of the brain. The long dendrites from the Purkinje cells extend into all three layers of the cortex. The cerebellum receives input from areas of the brain responsible for initiating movement, & from the body's sense receptors. Magnification: x250 at 35mm size. Ref: MICROCOSMOS, fig. 2.22, p. 26.
