Caption: Nerve cells of vision. Autoradiograph of a slice through nerve tissue from the visual centre of the brain, showing how visual messages from one eye are received by the brain. Rows of neurone (nerve cell) cubes are laid out in columns on the outside of the brain tissue. Active areas of the brain have absorbed a radioactive chemical and the glow is developed onto photographic paper. When one eye is stimulated, every cell column in the row is activated (luminous rectangles); in an on-off, on- off pattern.
