Caption: False-colour, freeze-fracture transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of an oligodendrocyte (coloured beige) attached to surface of a neurone (ie a nerve cell, which appears blue). Oligodendrocytes are components of neuroglia (non- neural cells in central nervous system - CNS). The cell has a central body with a no. of short, branched processes, & is involved in the myelination of axons of nerve cells within the CNS (myelin facilitates greater speed of nerve impulse conduction along axon). Photo from Guigoz film "Naissance du cerveau dix milliards de galaxies" by Claude Edelmann.
