Caption: False-colour transmission electron micrograph of a synapse, or junction, between two neurones in the human cerebral cortex, the outer grey matter of the brain. The synaptic gap (centre) appears deep red. Information is conducted along nerves by a series of electrical impulses and from one nerve to another through the release of neurotransmitter chemicals which diffuse across the synaptic gap to trigger an electrical impulse in the neighbouring nerve. Vesicles containing neurotransmitters are seen above the gap as small red/yellow spheres. The 2 large circular organelles (top) are mitoch- chondria, the sites of energy production in the nerve cell.
