Caption: Light micrograph of a section of the human cerebral cortex (grey matter of brain), showing a number of astrocytes (dark star-shaped cells) comprising a part of the neuroglia, the mass of support cells found in grey & white matter of the brain & spinal cord. Astrocytes are the most numerous glial cells in grey matter, where they are believed to provide mechanical & metabolic support for neurones (nerve cells); their branched processes occupy a large volume of the interneural space & many terminate on capillary membranes. Observational evidence suggests their involvement in metabolic exchange between the neurones & blood. Mag: X 500 at 6x7cm, X 210 at 35mm size.
