Caption: Light micrograph (Nissl method) of multipolar neurones (nerve cell) from the grey matter of the cerebral cortex, showing a number of neurone cell bodies. The cells' cytoplasms are darkly stained; the central nuclei are lighter stained. Processes of 2 types extend from all sides of the cell bodies: a single axon and numerous dendrites. The axon (nerve fibre) is the output channel from the nerve cell, while the dendrites function as sites of information input to the neurone. The cell bodies appear scattered in a mass of axons & dendrites of other neurones, supporting cells (neuroglia) and blood vessels. Magnification: X150 at 6x7cm, X63 at 35mm size.
