Caption: Light micrograph of nerve tissue from the cerebellum, showing the tangled complexity of nerve pathways. There may be as many as 50,000 dendrites (the fine processes from a nerve cell body) making contact with a single cell body - each capable of conveying a message from another nerve cell. These nerve circuits carry both excitatory and inhibitory messages: whether or not a particular nerve cell "fires" depends on the net effect of both these types of message. The human cerebellum coordinates fine movement, posture and balance and is responsible for our manual dexterity. Magnification: x60 at 35mm size.
