Caption: Light micrograph of nervous tissue of the brain, stained to show the pathways of axons, the main effector process of nerve cells. All nerve cells, or neurones, consist of a cell body with a varying number of extensions, the cell processes. One cell body is clearly visible at far right, containing a central, circular nucleus. Processes of 2 types extend from the cell body: a single axon & 1 or more dendrites. In general, axons may be regarded as the output channels from nerve cells & are commonly referred to as nerve fibres. Here, they appear as darkly stained lines, running horizontally & vertically over the image. Magnification: x250 at 6x7cm size. "Axoncolouring" Glees' silver stain
