Caption: Poppy flower (4th of 5 images). Close-up of the flower of the common poppy, Papaver rhoeas. Pollen from the anthers above can be seen lying on the bottom of the flower. The anthers surround the carpel (yellow), the ovule-containing part of the flower, which, if fertilized, grows to form the seed pod. P. rhoeas is a medium sized annual plant which grows in arable fields and disturbed ground, and flowers between June and August. See photos B760/357-361 for the sequence of development from flower bud to seed production.
