Caption: Multipolar nerve cells. Light micrograph of nerve cells (neurones) in the grey matter of the human brain. Neurones exist in varying sizes and shapes but all have a similar structure. At centre right, there is a cell body (red) with nucleus. Processes extend and branch from it: dendrites (seen here) receive impulses and act as sensory receptors for the cell; a single axon (here unseen) transmits the cell's response. The cell body thus acts to process incoming stimuli, and then transmit a response. Multipolar neurons have many dendrites, receiving stimuli from many sources. Around such brain neurones is the neuroglia, a mass of cells (orange) which support and protect the neurones.
