Multipolar nerve cell. Scanning electron micro- graph (SEM) of a mature nerve cell (neurone) grown in culture. Neurones exist in varying sizes and shapes but have a similar structure. There is a cell body (above centre) which contains a nucleus and acts to process nerve impulses. Branching dendrites seen in the foreground receive impulses and act as sensory receptors for the cell; an axon (unbranched, not seen) would transmit the cell's response. This cell body synapses with a neigh- bouring cell body at upper left. Multipolar neurones have many dendrites, receiving stimuli from many sources. They occur typically in the human brain. Magnification: x3,650 at 6x7cm size.
