Caption: Nerve cells in the brain. Illustration of a network of nerve cells found in the human brain, with an electrical discharge (white) passing through. At centre left is a nerve cell (neuron). Branched dendrites, seen at the base of the cell, receive incoming stimuli from neighbouring neurons. The cell issues its response from a large axon leading off the cell (at top). In this way nerve cells communicate with each other, providing information as a series of electrical discharges. On stimulation, a sudden change in the nerve cell- membrane occurs, causing an electrical potential to travel like a wave along the nerve.
