Caption: Nerve-muscle junction. Coloured transmission electron micrograph of a neuromuscular synapse, the junction between a motor neurone axon (nerve fibre) and a muscle fibre. At centre is the end of the nerve, closely associated with a muscle fibre (dense-packed structure at left). Inside the nerve clustered near to the muscle are small vesicles containing neurotransmitter chemicals. A nerve impulse causes neurotransmitter chemicals to pass across the gap (synaptic cleft) separating nerve from muscle; the chemicals stimulate or inhibit muscle receptors. A Schwann cell (top right) provides the nerve with structural and metabolic support. Magnification: x7350 at 35mm size.
