Caption: Neuron. Coloured light micrograph of a nerve cell (neuron) from the brain. The white circle in the cell's centre is the nucleus. Around this is the cell body, from which numerous thin processes (called dendrites and axons) spread out to other cells. The red network around the cell consists of dendrites and axons of other neurons. The brain consists almost entirely of billions of cells like this. Together they form the complex interconnect- ed circuitry that controls everything we do, from writing a symphony to scratching a fleabite. The cells work by transmitting electrical signals along their axons and dendrites to other cells. Magnification unknown.
