Caption: Motor neuron. Illustration of a human motor neuron, a type of nerve cell. The light disc at the top is the cell nucleus, inside the cell body. The thin branching processes around the cell body are dendrites - the "wires" that carry electrical signals to the cell. Descending from the cell body is a single axon. This is the neuron's output, which transmits impulses from the cell to a target organs in the body at up to 430 km per hour. Motor neurons carry signals from the central nervous system to organs around the body, such as muscles. The cell bodies are found in the brain or spinal cord, while the axons, which may be up to several metres long, are found inside nerves.
