Caption: Motor neuron. Illustration of a human motor neuron (nerve cell). The arrows show the direction of the nervous impulse, which enters the cell body (top left) through minute processes called dendrites. The impulse is then transmitted along the axon, which may be several metres long, at up to 430km per hour. The axon is enclosed in a myelin sheath (red) produced by Schwann cells (brown, nuclei represented by bulges). At the end of the axon the signal is transmitted to an effector organ, such as a muscle.
