Caption: Brain cell culture. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of a culture of nerve cells (neurones) from the human brain. At upper left is a large nerve cell body. A mass of branching processes, known as dendrites and axons, form a network interconnecting one nerve cell with another. Dendrites appear as thinner, more numerous processes that pass nerve impulses to the cell. Thicker axons (one leading from the top of the cell) then transmit the cell's response. The brain consists of billions of cells like this. Together they form the complex circuitry that controls everything we do, from eating to writing a symphony. Magnification: x1850 at 6x6cm size.
