Caption: Brain tissue. Light micrograph of a section cut through human nervous tissue showing nerve cells in grey matter of the brain. Nerve cells are seen as cell bodies (brown) with round central nucleus, and nerve processes (fibres) leading off them. The nerve processes are of two types: a single axon (the output nerve fibre) and many branching dendrites as smaller input processes that serve as sensory receptors. Smaller cells (purple) serve to support and nourish these nerve cells and fibres. Grey matter in the brain thus consists mainly of cell bodies, branched dendrites and small support cells. Grey matter in the cortex of the cerebrum is involved in conscious thought and memory.
