Caption: Multipolar nerve cell. Artwork of a nerve cell (neurone). This multipolar nerve cell has a cell body (at upper right) containing the rounded nucleus, from which many dendrites are seen branching. The dendrites receive nerve impulses and act as sensory receptors for the cell. The cell's reply is then transmitted through the single long axon, at lower left. The axon is covered with a layer of insulating myelin sheath which is produced by specialised Schwann's cells. Neurones of various types exist but all have a similar structure.
