Caption: Brain cell culture. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of a culture of nerve cells (neurones) from the human brain. At upper left is a large nerve cell body. A mass of branching fibres, known as dendrites and axons, form a network interconnecting one nerve cell with another. Dendrites, thinner and more numerous than axons, pass nerve impulses to the cell. Thicker axons (one leading from the top of the cell) then transmit the cell's response. The brain consists of billions such cells like this which control every aspect of human life. Magnification: x1850 at 6x6cm size.
