Caption: Motor end plates. Light micrograph of motor end plate nerve connections in skeletal muscle. These are where the motor neurone (nerve cell) endings meet the muscle. A motor neurone (line starting at bottom right corner) forms branches leading to individual muscle cells (blue, running diagonally across the frame). At its junctions with the muscle cells the neurone divides further to form a cluster (oval) of small terminal boutons (dots) on the muscle cell surface. A synapse occurs where each terminal bouton meets the muscle cell. Here, messages to relax or contract the muscle are passed on. The messages take the form of chemical neurotransmitters. Magnification: unknown.
