Caption: Motor neurone. Illustration of a human motor neurone, a type of nerve cell. The star-shaped cell body (at upper centre) contains the motor neurone's cell nucleus (light blue). The cell body is surrounded by thin branching processes called dendrites that carry nervous impulses to it. Descending from the cell body is a single axon, which ends at several terminal boutons (at bottom centre). A terminal bouton is a type of synapse that transmits nervous impulses that have travelled down the axon from the cell body to a muscle. Cell bodies form the grey matter of the brain and spinal cord.
