Caption: Purkinje nerve cell. Light micrograph of a section through a Purkinje nerve cell (neurone, upper centre) from the cerebellum of the brain. The Purkinje cell comprises a flask-shaped cell body from which branch numerous dendrites (dark). Purkinje cells are arranged between the junction of the granular layer (upper frame) and molecular layer of the grey matter of the cerebellum. Nerve impulses flow to the Purkinje cells through their dendrites. The cerebellum controls balance, posture and muscle coordination. Magnification: x100 at 35mm size.
