Caption: Nerve synapse. Computer artwork of a nerve impulse travelling across a synapse. Synapses are the junctions between nerve cells (neurons). When an electrical signal reaches a synapse, it causes synaptic vesicles (red) at the end of the neuron to burst. These release neurotransmitter chemicals (grey balls) across the gap (synaptic cleft). These bind to the second neuron, causing the propagation of an electrical signal along it. Each nerve cell in the body communicates with many others at synapses such as this.
