Caption: Unopened dahlia bud. Macrophotograph of a section through the unopened bud of a dahlia (Dahlia sp. ) flower. This flower is a member of the family compositae, meaning the flower head is actually made up of hundreds of small flowers. The flowers of this dahlia are made up of several tiny petal- like flowers called ray florets. The florets mature from the outermost inwards. Here, only the outer flowers have the red/pink colouration of the mature flower head. Dahlias are popular garden plants which originated in Mexico, but were introduced into Europe in the late 18th century. Magnification: x1.6 at 35mm size.
