Caption: Nerve synapse artwork. This is the junction between two nerve cells (neurons). An electrical signal in the first neuron causes vesicles (clear balls) to burst. These release a neurotransmitter such as serotonin (small dark balls) across the gap to the next nerve cell, where it binds to receptors (yellow). This initiates a signal in the second neuron, and the message is relayed. The mechanism is regulated by negative feedback. When enough serotonin is present in the gap (synaptic cleft), reuptake receptors on the first neuron (orange and red) are activated, and the release is halted. Faults in this system are responsible for some types of depression.
