Caption: Muscle nerve endings. Light micrograph of motor neuron end plates (upper left and centre left) in skeletal (striated) muscle. Skeletal muscle is under voluntary control and mainly functions in movement. Each motor neuron has an axon (black lines), which links the cell body located in the nervous system with the muscles. The axon terminates in boutons in the muscle fibres. These boutons form neuromuscular junctions, a type of synapse (nerve junction), where they meet the muscle cells. Signals are relayed from the end plates to the muscle by the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. This signal may cause the muscle fibre to contract.
