Caption: Human nerve cell. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a human multipolar nerve cell (neuron) from the myenteric plexus of the intestine. A single cell body (centre) is shown, with branching processes (nerve fibres) extending from it. These nerve fibres are dendrites which form synapse junctions with nerve fibres from other neurons. Dendrites receive incoming stimuli as nerve impulses, and transport these impulses to the cell body which may issue a response. Nerve responses are transmitted down a single axon nerve fibre (not seen here). In this way, the myenteric plexus controls processes of digestion in the intestine.
