Caption: Nerve cell growth. Light micrograph of nerve cells (neurons) that have been grown in culture. Each neuron has a cell body (dark) that is connected to other cell bodies by neurites (thin extensions, either axons or dendrites) to form a network. Neurons transmit electrical signals around the body, especially the brain and the spinal cord. These neurons have been grown from NT2 cells, a human teratocarcinoma cell line capable of differentiation into nerve cells. Research like this may discover methods of neural regeneration that could treat spinal paralysis and other nerve disorders.
