Caption: Nerve cell. Immunofluorescent light micrograph of a nerve cell (neurone) from the striatum of the brain. A fluorescent antibody (red) specific for the huntington protein has been added to show where the protein is expressed. This cell is expressing the normal form of the protein. A mutated form, called huntingtin, forms sticky plaques in the brain and causes Huntington's disease. The neurone consists of a cell body (oval, centre) with numerous processes (dendrites) branching from it. The dendrites collect and transmit information from other nerve cells. The cell body also has an axon leading from it, through which it passes information to other cells.
