Caption: Cerebellum nerve cells. Confocal light micrograph of granule neurons (nerve cells, green) and glial cells (support cells, red) from the cerebellum of the brain. Granule cells are small neurons that measure about 10 micrometres in diameter. They are also found in the cerebral cortex and account for half of the neurons in the central nervous system. Glial cells provide structural support and protection for neurons and also supply them with nutrients and oxygen. The cerebellum controls balance, posture and coordination. Magnification: x450 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
