Caption: Nerve cell growth. Coloured light micrograph of a 1-week old, nerve cell (neuron) cluster. This cell cluster has been grown in culture. The nerve cell bodies are still grouped together (centre) and the neurites (either axons or dendrites) that will connect the cell bodies to form a network, are beginning to develop (dark lines). Neurons transmit electrical nerve signals around the body. These neurons have been grown from NT2 cells, a human teratocarcinoma (cancer) cell line, capable of differentiation into nerve cells. Research like this may lead to methods of neural regeneration that could treat spinal paralysis and other nerve disorders. For images showing 3-week old neuron clusters see P360/0575 & 0576. Magnification: x200 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
