Caption: Light micrograph of two multipolar neurones (nerve cells) from the grey matter of the spinal cord of a cat. Three distinct processes are seen leading away from the cell body at right. These are dendrites which form junctions (synapses) with processes from neighbouring nerve cells, from which they receive stimuli. Within the right hand cell body is a pale nucleus containing a darkly- stained nucleolus. Surrounding the neurones is a mass of supporting cells collectively termed the neuroglia. This lends both mechanical and metabolic support to the nerve cells. Magnification: x500 at 35mm, x1000 at 5x7cm size.
