Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Smell. Profile of a woman smelling red and yellow roses. Smell is one of the five senses. Smell receptors are located in a small patch of mucous membrane in the lining of the roof of the nose. These are linked to the brain through the olfactory nerve. The mechanism of smell is probably based on the physical "fit" between odour molecules and the smell receptors. Different receptor types detect different odours. Odour molecules inhaled through the nose have to dissolve in the mucus before they can stimulate the receptors. The system is highly sensitive, as few as four molecules can give a recognisable smell.
