Caption: Nasal passages and sinuses. Coloured magnetic res- onance imaging (MRI) scans of a coronal section through a human face. Nasal passages and sinuses are visible. The nasal passages are seen at the centre of each image, outlined by a network of fine bones. To the sides of these bones are the maxillary sinuses, part of the system of spaces behind and around the nose which add resonance to the voice, trap foreign bodies and lighten the skull. Above each maxillary sinus, an eye socket is visible. MRI is a technique which uses radio waves and magnetic fields to create "slice" images through the body.
