Caption: Human nasal passages. Coloured 3D computed tomography (CT) scan of the rear part of the human nasal passages, seen from the front. This is the view that would be seen by a nasal endoscope (rhinoscope) inserted into the nose. The thin area of tissue at centre is the septum, dividing the two nostrils. At left and right is the soft tissue and cartilage that makes up the nose. In the background is a mass of membranous tissue rich in blood vessels. This tissue filters, warms and moistens air as it passes through the nose towards the lungs. Behind and surrounding the nose are the two ethmoid sinuses, one of four sets of paranasal sinuses. These are membrane-lined air-filled spaces in the bones of the face.
