Caption: Maxillary sinuses. Computed tomography (CT) scan through the front of a human head at the level of the maxillary sinuses (large black spaces). This is an axial slice, passing horizontally through the head, with the front of the head at top. The two maxillary sinuses, located in the maxillae (the cheekbones), are one of the set of four paranasal sinuses. The paranasal sinuses are membrane-lined air-filled spaces in the bones of the face. The sinuses drain into the nose and throat. Severe colds can develop into an infection called sinusitis, where the sinuses fill with mucus and pus. Here, the maxillary sinuses are clear and filled with air (black). The nasal passages are at centre.
