Caption: Smell receptors. Computer artwork of smell receptors. At top are the olfactory vesicles, which contain smell receptors in the form of small hairs (cilia). The information from these receptors is passed through the nasal epithelium (upper centre) to nerve synapses (multicoloured). From here the information is passed to the olfactory bulb in the brain where it is processed. There are over a million olfactory receptors in the human nose, all located in a small area at the back of the nasal cavity.
