Magnetism. A horse-shoe magnet pulls iron filings out of sulphur powder. Magnetism is a manifest- ation of one of the fundamental forces of physics: electromagnetism. Another of the fundamental forces is gravity. The magnetic force is generated by moving subatomic particles called electrons. All materials have magnetic properties but metals can produce particularly strong magnetic fields because their electrons flow freely, apart from atomic nuclei.
