Caption: Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera sp.) flower. This is a epiphyte or aerophyte plant that grows on another plant for mechanical support but not nutrients. It is native to Brazil, and grown as a winter-flowering houseplant. The flower's reproductive organs can be seen at centre. The male stamens are made up of a pollen sac (anther, yellow, upper centre) held up by a stalk (filament). The single female carpel has a bulbous end (stigma, pink, upper centre) that receives the male pollen. It is held up by a stalk (style) leading to the base (ovary, not seen) where fertilisation takes place.
