Caption: Eye. Abstract artwork of an eye looking at a star. The eye is the organ of sight. Light enters the eye through the pupil (lower right), a hole in the centre of the coloured iris (blue/green). The iris is a ring-shaped muscle which can dilate and contract to allow the optimum amount of light to enter the eye. Light is focused onto the retina (not seen), a light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. Most of the focusing is done by the cornea (convex hump above the pupil), and fine focusing is performed by an adjustable lens (not seen) suspended behind the iris. Nerves in the retina carry visual information to the brain.
