Caption: Human vision. Artwork of the mechanics of human vision and the functions of the eye and the brain. Light rays (multi-coloured, centre right) enter the eye (centre). They are focussed on the retina, a light-sensitive layer of tissue inside the eye. Photochemical reactions then convert the light energy into electrical impulses (wave signals, green). These are transmitted along the optic nerve (seen behind the eye, white) to the brain (pink). The variation in the intensity and colour of the light rays is conveyed in the electrical signals. The brain nerve cells (neurons, white, one at far left) process the electrical impulses to produce the sensation of vision.
