Caption: Optic nerve. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section through the optic nerve. The section is through the nerve as it leaves the back of the eyeball. The optic nerve collects the nerve impulses from the light sensitive cells in the retina. The impulses are relayed to the brain, which builds up a three dimensional picture of the surroundings based on the view of each eye. Where the optic nerve enters the retina, there are no light sensitive cells, and the area is a blind spot. Magnification x40 at 35mm size.
