Caption: Iris epithelium. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of epithelial cells (green) lining the underside of the human iris. The upper layer of cells has been sectioned, revealing the tiny cytoplasmic melanin granules (red) which provide the iris with its pigmentation (colour). The iris is the coloured part of the eye which contracts and dilates to control the amount of light passing into the eye. Magnification unknown.
