Caption: Magnetism. Computer artwork of the magnetic field around two bar magnets, as revealed using iron filings. The bar magnets are rectangular in shape. Flux lines which make up the magnetic field between the magnets form close loops flowing from the north pole of one magnet to the south pole of the other. Each iron filing becomes magnetized and aligns itself accordingly along the nearest line of flux. Although the magnetic field is actually continuous, interactions between the iron filings cause them to accumulate in thin arcing lines.
