Caption: Retina structure. Artwork of a section through the retina of the eye, showing the photoreceptor cells and other layers. The choroid layer (top, red and brown) lines the inside of the eye. At the back of the eye it is covered by the retina, the inner layer of which is the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE, green), a layer that prevents light passing out of the eye. The light-sensitive photoreceptor cells form the central layer and are of two types, rods and cones. Cones cells (red, blue and green) allow colour vision. Rod cells (pink) aid vision in dim light. Nerve cells (orange) transmit electrical impulses to the brain, triggered by light hitting the photoreceptors (from bottom).
