Caption: Retina structure. Artwork of a section through the retina of the eye, showing the photoreceptor cells and other layers. The retina, found at the back of the eye, contains light-sensitive photoreceptor cells (top layer of rods). Light falling on the retina passes through layers (centre and bottom) of nerve cells (orange and yellow) and blood vessels (red) to reach the photoreceptors. The light triggers the formation of electrical impulses in the bipolar neurons (orange nerve cells). The impulses are passed to the ganglion nerve cells (yellow), which form a more complex and interconnected mass of nervous tissue, and then on to the optic nerve and to the brain.
