Caption: Retinal synapses. Artwork of nerve junctions (synapses) between two retina photoreceptor cells (red) and three nerve cells (white/green). These nerve cells relay electrical impulses to the optic nerve, which conveys them to the brain. These electrical impulses are triggered by, and carry information about, light falling on the retina. The retina is the internal eye structure that contains these light-sensitive photoreceptors. The electrical impulses are processed by the brain to produce the sensory perception of vision.
