Caption: Retina structure. Artwork of a section through the retina of the eye, showing the photoreceptor cells and other layers. The choroid (top) lines the inside of the eye. At the back of the eye, the retina covers the choroid and the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE, green) prevents the passage of light beyond the retina. The next layer (and the rest of the image) is the light-sensitive photoreceptor cells. These are of two types, named after the shape of their outer sections (central layer). Two cone cells and seven rods cells are shown. Light falling on these sections (from bottom) triggers nerve impulses that are passed to nerve cells (off bottom, not seen) and the brain.
