Caption: Eye lens fibres. Light micrograph of a section through the lens of an eye, showing the arrangement of lens fibres. Each fibre is hexagonal. The resulting orderly arrangement, with the orientation of the protein crystallin in the fibres, contributes to the transparency of the lens. The fibres' arrangement also ensures that the lens can bend sufficiently to focus light rays from all sources, near and far, onto the light- detecting retina at the back of the eye. Some of the fibres still contain their nuclei (purple dots). These will be lost as the lens fibres mature. Mag: x115 when 10cm wide.
